Neo Metal Sonic

Poster Neo Metal Sonic, Personnage issus du jeu vidéo : Sonic Heroes (2003).
Synopsis

The approach to these posters is guided by the client’s request; the final decisions—whether artistic or structural—are therefore based on the client’s preferences. This poster is part of a pair of designs inspired by the Sonic universe, with the choice of characters initially based on Shadow, then Metal Sonic. The client’s request was to convey a modern, “Xerox”-style scientific aesthetic for the Shadow poster (hence the name Project Shadow) and to create a modern, metallic poster that highlights Metal Sonic’s distinctive visual characteristics.

(The poster being custom-made with a client, it features aesthetic characteristics specific to the client’s tastes and requests. My input and experience here serve as support, resulting in a more general description and analysis.)
The modern, Xerox and artistic approach demonstrates the character’s character and power. It includes explanatory and descriptive textual elements of the character and his story, in order to contextualize the subject of the poster and the visual. The metallic style reinforces the notion of a robot created from scratch; a metal texture and brushed brush effect support this metallic ensemble. In the background, we find contextual visual elements in vertical reading illustrating the antagonism of the character and its robotic power, exposing the subject and the main character forward. Visual elements, such as video game logos, provide a layer of context that corroborates the background paragraphs. Japanese text elements are present to notify the origin of the Sonic license.
Few colors are used to have increased visibility while keeping a contrast and saturation ratio. The choice of colors is made according to those displayed by Neo Metal Sonic. Black and gray recall the raw metallic side and benefit from a marking with the metallic blue background. White acts as a reading medium and facilitates readability.
The white and black alternative brings a flattening of the elements by letting rather the structure and textures express themselves. The color alternative for the third is based on choices similar to the original, but bringing a notion of danger and enhancement of the character via a bright yellow background.
Typographies are chosen for their simplicity and modernity, allowing easy association with each other and with the rest of the poster, notably via the advantages of serif-free fonts and low and rather uniform interlettering. This allows the presence of the entire character in the A of « Ultimate Machine ».
