This poster is a custom piece commissioned by a client who is a devoted fan of the series. Her request was to showcase the main characters in a retro style with modern elements, all within a dark color palette evoking the show’s grey and cloudy atmosphere. As Sherlock is an exceptionally high-quality TV series, inspiration came quickly and resources were readily available. My objective was to meet the client’s expectations while respectfully honoring the quality of the series and its visual legacy.

(The poster being custom-made with a client, it features aesthetic characteristics specific to the client’s tastes and requests. My input and experience here serve as support, resulting in a more general description and analysis.)
This poster was created following a client request that allowed considerable freedom in both direction and composition. For this reason, I chose a simple structure with clear, accessible meanings that remain visually pleasing. The selected style stays within a retro spectrum, particularly in the treatment of graphic and typographic elements. A stamp and stencil-paint effect was favored, using contrasts and color relationships to establish a clear hierarchy. The focus remains on the main characters, with an emphasis on the character of Sherlock. The two running companions preserve the investigative and pursuit-of-truth aspect, while also conveying momentum and forward movement of the characters.
In the background layer, we find a negative silhouette of Sherlock overlaid with a positive silhouette, looking into the distance and interrupting the previously suggested motion. This composition allows the viewer to visually interpret the different facets and personality of the character. A careful balance of tone and contrast enables this overlay while maintaining simple and organic readability. In the foreground, a frieze composed of various shapes outlines the London skyline with its iconic buildings, placing the characters in a recognizable setting. Its darker tone adds depth and creates an additional reading layer, allowing the lower part of the poster to stand out.
Indeed, the lower section of the poster contains important typographic and iconographic elements, including the name of the series and a spray-painted annotation—the signature of the show’s antagonist. Readability is the primary focus in this area to preserve the theme and hierarchy established by the different layers.
The chosen colors reflect the client’s desire for a rather dark atmosphere in terms of color palette, rather than narrative tone. The visual hierarchy of graphic elements (characters and silhouettes) is achieved progressively through contrast and tonal relationships. The poster is designed to be read from top to bottom, transitioning from lighter to darker areas. The typographic elements at the top and bottom are in yellow to create a contrast in saturation and brightness, improving readability and separating informational elements from the rest of the poster. The alternative versions offer distinct aesthetics and help identify spatial zones, particularly through the negative version.
The selected typefaces are Roboto Black and Abadi MT-Condensed Extra Bold. Roboto is used for the title to maintain the aesthetic and graphic spirit of the original typography, while ensuring strong readability thanks to its bold, modern, and simple forms. Abadi MT is chosen for its retro feel, with slight serifs and curved shapes that ensure full readability while embracing a distinctive style reminiscent of the typography found in the original literary works from which the story and characters of Sherlock Holmes originate.
